Swiss-Italian Tensions Rise Over Treatment Costs After Deadly Fire

Switzerland plans to seek reimbursement from Italy for the medical treatment of Italian citizens injured in a deadly nightclub fire in Crans-Montana, which killed 41 people on New Year’s Eve.

The Swiss social insurance office said the government intends to recover hospital costs, a move that has heightened tensions between the two countries.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the request as “shameful” following reports that bills had been sent to victims’ families.

Swiss authorities clarified that families will not be required to pay, as the matter will be handled at the governmental level.
