U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday a new 35% tariff on all Canadian imports starting August 1, 2025, in response to Ottawa’s recent imposition of duties on American goods.
The move was outlined in an official letter sent to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and published on Trump’s social platform, Truth Social. “Instead of cooperating with the United States, Canada responded by imposing its own tariffs,” Trump wrote.
He stated that the new tariffs would be applied “in addition to all existing sectoral duties,” signaling a further escalation in trade tensions between the neighboring countries.
The announcement raises concerns over potential impacts on key sectors such as energy, agriculture, and manufacturing, as U.S.-Canada trade relations face renewed strain.
