Standard & Poor’s has downgraded France’s sovereign credit rating from AA to A+, citing “high uncertainty” over the country’s fiscal outlook.
The move places France on par with Spain and Portugal in terms of creditworthiness, which could lead to higher government borrowing costs.
The downgrade follows a surge in the budget deficit and public debt, which exceeds 110% of GDP, putting added pressure on the Paris government to curb spending.
