Series of Earthquakes Near Tehran Revives Fears of Major Seismic Disaster

Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, that a series of nine minor earthquakes struck the Pardis area east of Tehran on Tuesday evening, renewing concerns among experts about the possibility of a major earthquake hitting the Iranian capital.

The repeated seismic activity has intensified fears that accumulated tectonic pressure beneath Tehran and surrounding areas could eventually trigger a much stronger earthquake, especially since the capital lies near several active fault lines.

Although earthquakes are common in Iran, experiencing such a number of tremors in rapid succession is considered unusual.

Residents living near the Mosha fault line, one of the country’s most seismically active zones, felt the tremors that struck eastern Tehran province in a single night.

State media reported that one of the earthquakes measured 4.6 in magnitude, while confirming that no casualties or material damage had been reported.

Mehr News Agency also quoted earthquake expert Mehdi Zare as saying it remains unclear whether the tremors represent a release of accumulated seismic energy, potentially reducing future risks, or whether they are warning signs of stronger seismic activity to come near Tehran.
