Brazilian authorities have detained former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a house arrest sentence and was sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempting a coup, his lawyer and a source close to the case said on Thursday, without providing details on the reason for the arrest.

Bolsonaro’s lawyer, Celso Filardi, told AFP: “He has been detained, but I do not know the reason.” The Brazilian police said in a statement that they executed a preventive detention order issued by the Supreme Court, confirming that the detained individual is the former president.
