German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Thursday, April 9, 2026, that Germany has resumed communication with Iran following the temporary ceasefire between Tehran and Washington.
Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Merz said the German government is restarting talks with Iran “after a long silence imposed by important reasons,” noting that the move is being coordinated with the United States and European partners.
He added that the renewed dialogue comes as envoys from Iran and the United States are expected to meet in Pakistan for negotiations that could pave the way for a broader resolution to the crisis.
The development reflects ongoing international efforts to support de-escalation and reopen diplomatic channels after weeks of military tensions between the two sides.
