Japan Extinguishes Largest Wildfire in Decades After 11-Day Battle

Officials in Japan announced that firefighters have successfully extinguished a major wildfire in the northern part of the country, described as the largest in decades, after 11 days of intense firefighting efforts.

The blaze broke out in late April in the mountainous Iwate Prefecture, where hundreds of firefighters and more than a thousand soldiers were deployed to contain the flames, according to Agence France-Presse.

The fire burned approximately 1,600 hectares, an area nearly five times the size of Central Park in New York City, highlighting the scale of the damage.
