Agents from the United States Secret Service shot an armed man in downtown Washington, D.C. on Monday, prompting a temporary lockdown around the White House.

Deputy Director Matthew Quinn said the shooting occurred near the National Mall shortly after the motorcade of Vice President JD Vance passed through the area, according to Agence France-Presse.

Quinn noted that there is no indication the vice president was the target and declined to speculate on any connection between the incident and previous assassination attempts involving President Donald Trump.

“We will not speculate at this stage,” Quinn told reporters, adding that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the shooting.
