Gunman Killed After Opening Fire Near the White House

A man opened fire Saturday evening near a security checkpoint close to the White House in Washington before being shot dead by U.S. Secret Service agents, authorities said.

Officials also reported that a bystander was injured during the shooting, while security forces quickly sealed off the area and launched an investigation into the incident.

Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said the incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. local time, when a man near the White House security perimeter pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing.

He confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump, who was inside the White House at the time, was unharmed.

According to officials, Trump was working on negotiations related to a possible agreement with Iran when the shooting occurred.
