FIFA is preparing to introduce unprecedented changes to the Laws of the Game during the 2026 World Cup.
The new regulations include a strict five-to-ten-second countdown to prevent time-wasting during throw-ins, goal kicks, and substitutions, with penalties ranging from loss of possession to delayed player entry.
VAR powers will also be significantly expanded to include reviews of corner-kick decisions and second yellow-card incidents. In addition, players who cover their mouths while confronting opponents or match officials may face direct red cards as part of efforts to curb unsporting behavior.
