UNICEF Report: 1.1 Billion Children Worldwide Face Multiple Climate Threats

Nearly 1.1 billion children—almost half of the world’s child population—are exposed to at least three overlapping climate-related hazards, according to a new report released Tuesday by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The report, titled Children’s Climate Risk Report 2026, identified drought, extreme temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius, and heatwaves as the most common climate threats affecting children globally. It added that nearly every child in the world is exposed to at least one climate-related risk.

UNICEF noted that children are more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change than adults because their bodies are more sensitive to environmental stress. They heat up more quickly, sweat less efficiently, breathe faster, and require more food and water relative to their body weight.

The report also warned that children have lower chances of surviving extreme weather events, making them one of the groups most at risk from climate-related disasters.

The assessment examined children’s exposure to eight major climate hazards, including droughts, extreme heat, wildfires, heatwaves, coastal and river flooding, dust and sandstorms, and tropical cyclones.
