Iran Begins Funeral Ceremony for Ali Khamenei Amid Calls for Revenge

Thousands of mourners gathered in Tehran on Saturday, July 4, 2026, as Iran began the week-long funeral ceremonies for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the Imam Khomeini Prayer Complex.

The ceremonies include the national anthem, memorial speeches, and Quran recitations, as Iran holds a week of public mourning following Khamenei’s death in the first airstrike of the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, ending his 37-year rule.

State television showed Khamenei’s coffin draped in the Iranian flag with his black turban placed on top. The coffin was displayed on a large black platform alongside four other coffins belonging to family members who were also killed in the strike.

The prayer complex was filled with mourners waving Iranian flags and holding portraits of Khamenei. Iranian state media reported chants of “Death to America,” while other state-affiliated videos showed crowds calling for revenge.
