The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo announced that more than 2,000 people had died in the country’s Ebola outbreak, the fastest spread of the disease recorded in the country so far.

The latest data showed 4,381 confirmed cases, including 2,011 deaths, while 704 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals or isolation centers.

The rise in the death toll comes about three months after the outbreak was declared on May 15. The country recorded 1,000 deaths in nine weeks before the toll doubled in just three weeks, amid warnings that aid is reaching remote areas too slowly.
