Floodwaters inundated roads and homes on the Greek island of Rhodes on Monday following 17 hours of heavy rainfall, prompting authorities to urge residents to avoid travel and keep schools closed.

Greek broadcaster ERT News reported that Rhodes was the area worst affected by the storm system sweeping parts of the country.

Civil protection authorities warned residents to remain indoors unless travel was essential and to avoid driving.

Flooding also affected Samos island and the coastal city of Volos, where firefighters responded to water accumulation.

Meteorologists warned that heavy rainfall and thunderstorms could continue through Tuesday.
