Algeria Announces Decision to Send Army Units to Niger to Protect Shared Economic and Energy Interests

The Algerian presidency announced on Monday that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had decided to send military units to Niger to protect shared energy and economic interests between the two countries.

According to the presidency, the decision was made at the request of Nigerien authorities and in accordance with the Algerian Constitution, particularly Articles 30 and 91.

The statement added that both chambers of the Algerian Parliament—the Council of the Nation and the People’s National Assembly—had unanimously approved the decision during two closed plenary sessions held on October 25, 2026.

The presidency did not specify how many military units would be deployed or the precise nature of their field missions, stating only that the decision was intended to safeguard shared interests in the energy and economic sectors.
