Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has reportedly secured a fourth presidential term after winning 51.79% of valid votes in the second round of the presidential election, compared with 48.21% for his rival, right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, according to final results attributed to the Superior Electoral Court.
The reported figures show Lula receiving more than 64.2 million votes, while Bolsonaro secured approximately 59.8 million, after the latter led the first round held on October 4.
According to the electoral account provided, Lula would become the first presidential candidate in Brazil to overturn a first-round deficit and defeat his opponent in a runoff since the introduction of the two-round electoral system in 1989.
The election campaign focused heavily on the cost of living, public security, corruption, and foreign policy, reflecting the country’s deep political divisions.
