G7 Leaders Pledge Stronger Action to Address Developing Countries’ Debt Burdens

Leaders of the Group of Seven on Tuesday pledged to strengthen efforts aimed at addressing the heavy debt burdens facing developing countries, including middle-income nations that are not eligible for existing debt-relief initiatives.

The commitment was outlined in a joint statement issued after a session attended by guest countries including Kenya, Egypt, India, Brazil, and South Korea during the summit in Évian, France.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to international development cooperation while calling for economic reforms and greater reliance on private investment to support sustainable growth.

The statement noted that traditional development policies have delivered meaningful results but have had only a limited impact on reducing financial dependence on external aid.

G7 leaders emphasized that public funding remains essential for development efforts but is no longer sufficient on its own to meet growing global development needs, highlighting the importance of mobilizing private-sector investment.
