An Indian Air Force Antonov AN-32 military transport aircraft crashed on Saturday while attempting to land at Jorhat Air Base in the northeastern state of Assam, military authorities said.
In a brief statement, the Indian Air Force confirmed that the aircraft was involved in an accident during landing operations and announced the launch of an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. No information was immediately provided regarding casualties or the number of people on board.
Footage aired by Indian media showed thick black smoke rising from the air base, followed by images of the wreckage of the Russian-made aircraft surrounded by military personnel.
The crash recalled a similar incident in 2019, when another AN-32 aircraft that had taken off from Jorhat crashed near the Chinese border, killing all 13 passengers and crew members on board.
The Indian Air Force operates around 100 AN-32 aircraft, which are widely used for military transport and logistical missions.
