According to NBC News, the United States Department of Defense has become increasingly concerned about alleged Israeli intelligence activities targeting the United States and has reportedly raised the associated counterintelligence threat assessment to a “critical” level.
The report, citing three former U.S. officials, said the Defense Intelligence Agency issued a new assessment amid the war with Iran and growing tensions between Washington and Tel Aviv.
Officials cited in the report claimed that concerns stem from assessments suggesting Israel may be attempting to monitor senior U.S. officials in order to gather information about internal decision-making discussions related to the conflict.
The White House rejected the report, calling it entirely unfounded, while the Pentagon declined to comment.
A spokesperson for the Embassy of Israel in Washington also denied the allegations, describing claims that Israel spies on the United States as completely false.
The report comes amid media accounts of growing disagreements between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu over regional security issues, including Iran and Lebanon.
