Reporters Without Borders has announced in its 2026 World Press Freedom Index that global press freedom has fallen to its lowest level in 25 years.
The report highlighted a significant overall decline in press freedom worldwide, marking the weakest average performance in a quarter of a century, reflecting growing challenges faced by journalists and media organizations.
In the rankings, Tunisia dropped 8 places, moving from 129th in 2025 to 137th in 2026.
Several Arab countries also recorded declines: Algeria fell from 126th to 145th, Egypt slipped to 170th, losing one position, while Saudi Arabia dropped to 176th. The United Arab Emirates ranked 158th.
On the other hand, Qatar ranked 75th and Morocco placed 105th, showing relatively stronger positions within the region.
