South Korea said on Tuesday it will “review its position” on joining operations led by the United States in the Strait of Hormuz, following a call by President Donald Trump after an attack on a South Korean vessel near the waterway.
An explosion and fire were reported Monday aboard the cargo ship HMM Namo in the strait, which has been effectively disrupted since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East on February 28, according to Agence France-Presse.
South Korea’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that all 24 crew members, including six South Koreans, were unharmed.
Commenting on the incident, Trump said it should prompt Seoul to join U.S.-led efforts to escort commercial vessels through the strait.
In response, South Korea’s Defense Ministry stated it would “carefully review” its position, without committing to any immediate change.
