A temporary pause in the Russia-Ukraine war took effect following an initiative announced by U.S. President Donald Trump calling for a three-day ceasefire during Russia’s Victory Day celebrations marking the defeat of Nazi Germany.
Both Moscow and Kyiv quickly agreed to the proposal, which began on May 9, in an effort to avoid escalation during Russia’s annual commemorations.
Commenting on the acceptance of the initiative, Trump said he was prepared to send American negotiators to Moscow if it could help achieve a settlement to the conflict. He also expressed support for extending the ceasefire beyond the announced period.
However, Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov stated on Saturday that the agreement covers only a three-day ceasefire and not a longer arrangement.
Victory Day celebrations in Moscow proceeded without major military escalation, with Red Square hosting a limited military parade compared to previous years. Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the event alongside several leaders from allied and friendly nations.
