U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Switzerland to participate in the first round of talks with Iran on a potential nuclear agreement, according to a U.S. official cited by Axios.
The development comes after Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire in Lebanon, following concerns that escalating hostilities could jeopardize efforts to transform the temporary agreement ending the U.S.-Iran conflict into a broader and more lasting regional settlement.
The move follows Vice President J.D. Vance’s decision to cancel plans to attend the talks, which had been postponed amid renewed fighting in Lebanon, raising fresh questions about negotiations linked to reopening the Strait of Hormuz to global shipping.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump told NBC News that he had spoken with Israeli officials and urged them to agree to the ceasefire as part of ongoing efforts to reduce regional tensions.
