New Jersey Transit sparked widespread backlash after announcing a special fare of $150 for round-trip train tickets to MetLife Stadium during the 2026 World Cup—up to ten times the usual price.
The stadium, located about 30 kilometers from Manhattan’s Penn Station with a travel time of around 30 minutes, is set to host key matches, including the tournament final.
FIFA quickly responded, issuing a strongly worded statement on Friday describing the decision as “unprecedented” and warning it could have a “deterrent” effect on fans.
The move comes amid growing criticism over the rising costs associated with attending the World Cup, including ticket prices and related expenses.
