UEFA announced on Thursday the appointment of Somali referee Omar Artan to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, following consultations with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The match will feature Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa on August 12 in Salzburg.

The appointment comes despite controversy surrounding Artan’s earlier exclusion from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being denied entry to the United States, highlighting the intersection of sporting and political issues.
