The death toll from the earthquake that struck Colombia has risen to 224, with more than 570 people injured, while dozens of buildings collapsed and critical infrastructure was damaged.

The earthquake measured 7.4 on the Richter scale and struck Chocó province on the Pacific coast early Monday. The Colombian Geological Service recorded 47 aftershocks in the following hours.

The government declared a national disaster to accelerate rescue operations, while tremors were also felt in Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela. Rescue teams continue to search for survivors and recover victims.
