A proposal to end the academic year in Mexico on June 5 — more than a month earlier than usual — has sparked widespread criticism after being linked to the hosting of 2026 World Cup matches.
Education Minister Mario Delgado said the proposal was also related to an intense heatwave affecting several states.
However, President Claudia Sheinbaum stressed that the measure remains “only a proposal.”
Research centers and business associations warned of potential consequences for education standards, the labor market, and families, particularly due to the additional childcare costs parents may face.
