Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday condemned the circulation of fake images of her generated using artificial intelligence, warning about the dangers of deepfake technology.
In social media posts, Meloni said that manipulated images had been shared online as if they were real, accusing some actors of using any means necessary to attack others and spread falsehoods.
She described deepfake technology as a “dangerous tool” capable of deception and manipulation, noting that while she can defend herself, many others cannot.
Meloni concluded by urging the public to act responsibly: “There should always be one rule: verify before you believe, and believe before you share,” warning that what is happening to her today could happen to anyone tomorrow.
