Trump Opposes Seizing Iran’s Kharg Island Despite Earlier Threats

U.S. President Donald Trump does not support a potential military seizure of Iran’s Kharg Island, despite assurances that such an operation could succeed, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal.

The sources said Trump was informed that an amphibious assault on the island would likely be successful, but he expressed concern over potentially heavy U.S. casualties, deeming them “unacceptable.”

He reportedly believes American forces would become an easy target during such an operation.

Trump had previously threatened to “wipe out” Kharg Island—an important hub for Iran’s oil exports—if Tehran failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or if negotiations did not yield quick results.

In a late March post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the United States was engaged in “serious talks” to end its military operations, while warning of major escalation if a deal was not reached promptly.
