British police announced on Wednesday the arrest of a man and a woman on suspicion of attempting to set fire to a synagogue in Finchley, north London, describing the incident as an “antisemitic hate crime.”
Police said a 47-year-old woman was first arrested in Watford, northwest of London, followed by the detention of a 46-year-old man in the same area. Both are currently in custody.
Earlier, authorities reported that two suspects wearing dark clothing and masks threw two bottles believed to contain petrol, along with bricks, at the synagogue shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
The police confirmed that neither bottle ignited, and no damage or injuries were reported.
According to reports cited by Agence France-Presse, a little-known group, possibly linked to Iran, has claimed responsibility for the attack, as reported by the SITE monitoring group.
