The U.S. Department of Energy announced the transfer of 13.5 kilograms of highly enriched uranium from an old research reactor in Caracas to the United States.

The department stated that the material had become surplus following the reactor’s shutdown in 1991 and was safely shipped to the Savannah River Site facility in South Carolina for reprocessing and reuse.
