Authorities in the U.S. state of California have launched an investigation into FIFA over allegations of misleading commercial practices during the sale of 2026 World Cup tickets, following complaints from fans who said they received seats of a lower category than the ones they paid for.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta requested clarifications from FIFA, including original and revised stadium seating maps and details regarding changes made to seat classifications.

The investigation comes amid growing criticism over rising ticket prices and distribution mechanisms ahead of the first World Cup edition featuring 48 national teams.
