The Iranian Armed Forces announced on Monday, May 4, 2026, that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz will be conducted “only in coordination with Iran,” following U.S. President Donald Trump announcement of a “Freedom Project” aimed at assisting commercial vessels in the waterway.
Iran’s unified military command warned the United States Navy against approaching or entering the strait, stating it would respond “decisively to any threat at any level and in any area of Iran.”
Tehran further cautioned that any U.S. military actions would complicate the current situation and endanger maritime security in the Gulf, while asserting that it maintains full control over the strait and manages its security effectively.
The Iranian forces also called on all commercial ships and oil tankers to refrain from movement in the strait without prior coordination with Iranian authorities.
