Mexican education authorities have agreed to keep the 2025–2026 academic calendar unchanged, reversing an earlier proposal to end the school year early, a plan that had sparked criticism from parents and questions over disruptions linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Education Minister Mario Delgado said on Monday that the federal education ministry and state authorities unanimously agreed to maintain the current 185-day school calendar, meaning the academic year will still end on July 15 as originally scheduled.
Delgado stated that the decision came in response to a request from President Claudia Sheinbaum and was intended to provide certainty for millions of Mexican families who organize their daily routines around the school calendar.
Authorities added that individual states may still introduce local adjustments under exceptional circumstances, including extreme heat or logistical challenges related to the World Cup, which Mexico will co-host alongside the United States and Canada.
Delgado had previously suggested ending the school year on June 5 instead of July 15, citing rising temperatures and the need to reduce pressure on host cities during the tournament.
