Human rights warnings over the deteriorating health of Palestinian doctor Hossam Abu Safiya have renewed attention on the conditions of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, following reports that he was beaten and transferred to an underground interrogation unit, raising fears for his life.
Physicians for Human Rights warned that Abu Safiya’s condition has significantly worsened after his transfer to the interrogation section at Ramla Prison, stating that his life is in immediate danger.
According to the organization, Abu Safiya’s lawyer visited him two days ago and observed recent injuries and severe bruising on his head, around his eyes, ears, and neck. The lawyer also reported that he appeared extremely weak and was experiencing persistent difficulty breathing and speaking.
