The Chinese-owned oil tanker “Rich Star,” which is under U.S. sanctions, successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday morning after a failed attempt the previous day.
According to vessel tracking data from MarineTraffic, the tanker—sailing under the flag of Malawi—managed to transit the strategic waterway after initially turning back.
The 188-meter oil and chemical tanker had departed from the UAE’s Port of Sharjah on Monday en route to China, but briefly reversed course shortly after approaching the strait.
The Rich Star has been under U.S. sanctions since 2023 due to its alleged ties to Iran, amid heightened tensions affecting maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
