The World Health Organization confirmed on Monday, May 11, 2026, that seven passengers aboard a cruise ship were infected with the Andes strain of hantavirus, bringing the total number of reported cases to nine.
In an email statement, a WHO spokesperson said the update followed France’s announcement that a female passenger evacuated from the “MV Hondius” had tested positive for the virus.
The spokesperson added that two additional cases among the nine are suspected infections, including the individual believed to be the first source of the outbreak, who died before being tested.
According to the World Health Organization, the outbreak has resulted in three confirmed deaths so far.
